For all levels — you don’t have to be an active meditator to come by!
Jhāna refers to a series of progressively deeper states of meditative absorption mapped in detail by the Buddhist tradition, though the underlying practice is older still and echoes across contemplative traditions from Christian mysticism to pre-Buddhist yoga. By settling the mind into a state of relaxed, tranquil awareness, practitioners can access states of intense joy, contentment, and deep equanimity — pleasure that’s entirely endogenous, generated by attention alone with no substance involved.
What makes jhāna compelling is that it’s trainable and reproducible rather than mystical or random. Recent secular approaches treat it as a learnable protocol, making these states far more accessible than the traditional monastic path suggested. Beyond the experience itself, jhāna serves as a platform for deeper insight practice and appears to shift baseline mood and reactivity even off the cushion.
